We cannot deny the fact that social media has been very expansive in our lives at this point. It is where most of the people are. Social media has been seen as the primary avenue for people to communicate with each other. However, this does not mean that traditional media forms such as radio, television, and print are meant to be disregarded. While these media forms has not been seen as the most used public relations channels, they still remain to be one of the most valued. One of the main reasons why traditional media formats such as television, radio, and print are still relevant public relations tools would be the ubiquity that they possess. While it is true that social media networks are slowly growing in number at this current moment, you still cannot deny the fact that there are more people who own traditional media tools than social media devices. There are still more people who own television sets than those who own tablet computers. More and more people still own radio sets than iPods. Finally, there are more people who have access to newspapers and magazines compared to online publications.
Traditional media also provide a lot of opportunities for companies to send out their messages across. This means that traditional media forms provide an expansive set of options. Some PR efforts may have been made specific to a particular media form. There are campaigns that are specifically formulated for radio such as radio jingles. There are others that are made to be a specific portion in publications only. Some may also be specifically made as public service announcements in television. Most of these may not be totally catered by social media as not everyone has access to it.
Apart from that, traditional media formats reach out to a wide audience compared to social media. This is in a sense that traditional media is made to be more affordable as compared to its counterpart. Social media makes use of newer technologies. Hence, it is expected that these tools will be more expensive as compared to traditional media tools. As not everyone can afford using social media tools, information present in that portal might not reach out to those who need it. Traditional media provides a more affordable way of accessing information.
However, the difference between the benefits of traditional and social media is not intended to create a disparity between the two. This only means that both methods have their own strengths and weaknesses. For a more effective PR campaign, it is advisable to balance out the two methods. In this way, the coverage of information becomes wider and more effective.
